For Google to verify your Business Profile, you need to validate that you own and actively operate the business at the location you provide. This typically involves a video verification showing your workspace, business equipment, branding, and access to non-public areas. If you serve customers at their locations rather than inviting them to yours, your profile should be configured as a Service Area Business. This allows you to define the communities you serve while keeping your street address hidden from public view. Your address is still required for verification, but it will not be displayed on your profile, helping protect your privacy while demonstrating legitimate business ownership and control.

Professional Meeting Location

Service area businesses and some storefront businesses still need a professional place to meet with clients, vendors and employees. This may not be practical at your home, a coffee shop and sometimes even at your office.

Permanent Mailing Address

Businesses often need several different mailing addresses. First is the legal address for the Statutory Agent listed for your LLC. This is usually an attorney if you set this up professionally but if you skip legal help and do this directly with the Ohio Secretary of State then you may need to list yourself as the Statutory agent. It may not be ideal to use your home address and you cant use a PO Box or CMRA (mail center).

For business mail such as checks, bills and contracts it may be helpful to have a PO Box if this is convenient to your home. It is a huge hassle for a business to change the payment address for their customer payments, credit card statements, bank statements and other business mail so with a PO Box you can set this once and have mail go there for decades and also know that it is secure while you are out of town.

What is a Service Area Business?

A Service Area business is a business that does not have customers visit their brick and mortar location.  It does not apprea in map results and hides your address. Some examples are home services and contractors that go to the customer's location, and businesses operating out of their home or a coworking space.

What is a Storefront Business?

A Storefront business is a business where customers come to your location to purchase goods and/or services. This is a mapped Google Business Profile so that customers can get directions to visit the business. Storefront businesses are popular with companies that want to show up in "near me" searches, such as "coffee shops near me" or "hair salon near me".

Benefits and Limitations

Both types of businesses can configure up to 20 individual towns or neighborhoods for their Google Business Profile. In practice, your website will need to show examples of your work and have landing pages for each of those communities before Google will show your business profile to customers in that area.

When a Home-Based Business Should Hide Its Address

A home-based business should configure their Google Business Profile as a Service Area business and hide their address unless you have signage and customers visit your home. Google will still require video verification of your home office to show that you own and control the business.

When A Storefront Business Is Appropriate

Google requires storefront business to meet the following criteria:

  • have permanent signage at your location
  • have staff onsite during your business hours
  • submit a video and often additional verification documents to show that your business operates here and you have access to non-public areas

Our Staff Picks for Best Lancaster Locations

Best For Contractors

The UPS Store – Lancaster: For a contractor who works mainly at job sites, The UPS Store offers a practical separation between home and business mail, along with package acceptance, shipping and printing. It is a good fit when a permanent desk is unnecessary; contractors needing a meeting room should arrange one separately.

Best For Consultants

Downtown Offices – 201 S Broad Street: Downtown Offices provides a downtown professional setting with furnished day offices and meeting rooms, allowing consultants to work independently and host client conversations without maintaining a full-size office.

Best For Financial Advisors

Downtown Offices – 201 S Broad Street: A private furnished office and bookable meeting space can offer a more suitable environment for confidential client conversations than a retail mailbox counter. Advisors should independently verify privacy, sound isolation, regulatory and recordkeeping requirements.

Best For Remote Workers

Downtown Offices – 201 S Broad Street: The day-office and flexible subscription options provide a change from working at home, with Wi-Fi and a walkable downtown setting. Confirm booking hours and availability before planning recurring use.

Best For Startups

EZOfficeSpace: A small team can begin with bookable space or a modest office arrangement and add space as work demands increase. The downtown location also puts new owners near other professional and civic services.

Best Overall Value

The UPS Store – Lancaster: For a business needing primarily a separate mailing address and dependable parcel receiving rather than physical workspace, a private mailbox can be a lower-commitment solution. Actual value depends on current mailbox rates and usage; this is not a verified lowest-price award.

Frequently Asked Questions

Trades, Construction & Home Services Accordion
Can I use a virtual office as my business address in Lancaster?

A virtual office or mail-reception plan may provide a professional mailing address, but check what the provider allows for registrations, client visits and public listings. A mailing address alone does not establish a staffed business location.

Can I use a UPS Store mailbox for my Google Business Profile?

Generally no. Google does not allow businesses to use a rented mailbox or virtual office address as a storefront unless the business genuinely operates there with eligible staffing and customer-facing operations. Service-area businesses may be able to hide their home address instead.

What is the difference between a PO Box and a private mailbox?

A USPS PO Box is a postal box, while a commercial private mailbox usually uses the provider’s street address with a PMB or box number. Carrier acceptance, forwarding and access vary by provider.

Where can I rent a meeting room in Lancaster?

Start with EZOfficeSpace and ask about room size, hourly availability, Wi-Fi, presentation equipment, visitor access and parking. Conventional office listings may not provide bookable shared meeting rooms.

Are there drop-in coworking options in Lancaster?

A downtown day office is advertised at EZOfficeSpace, and another day office has been listed on Granville Pike. Confirm same-day access and whether the option is a private office rather than an open shared desk.

What is best for a home-based contractor?

A mailbox service can separate business correspondence and package deliveries from home, while a day office can provide occasional client meeting space. Verify that the chosen address meets licensing, insurance and advertising requirements.

Where can Lancaster startups get free business advice?

Ohio SBDC at Ohio University serves Fairfield County and lists an advising location at the Lancaster Fairfield County Chamber. Advisers can help with business plans, financing, marketing and growth decisions.

How can I meet other local business owners?

The Lancaster Fairfield County Chamber and Destination Downtown Lancaster are strong starting points. AmSpirit and BNI also have regional chapter finders; check current meeting locations before attending.

Do I need a long-term lease for an office?

Not necessarily. Flexible day offices and subscription-based workspace may suit early-stage businesses, while traditional offices may require longer commitments. Compare total monthly costs, deposits and cancellation terms.

Can I receive packages at a Lancaster business mailbox?

The UPS Store advertises acceptance of packages from multiple carriers. Ask about parcel size limits, holding periods, pickup hours and forwarding charges before signing up.

How do I find business incentives or workforce programs?

Contact City of Lancaster business staff, Fairfield County Economic Development or Fairfield 33 to discuss eligibility for site-specific programs, workforce assistance and available commercial property.

What should I verify before selecting a business location?

Check actual access hours, address usage rules, package handling, parking, meeting-room costs, internet, accessibility, security, signage, staffing and whether the location is suitable for client visits.
